Reimbursement through health insurance

Certain medical aids are covered by your basic health insurance. You can qualify for this reimbursement if you meet the eligibility criteria for an aid.

What is a medical certificate and where can I get one?

A medical certificate is a document that clearly states that you have an eye condition or visual impairment that causes certain limitations and specifies the special assistance required. A medical certificate must include a detailed description of the eye condition, residual vision, and a prescription for the desired aid.

A medical certificate can be requested from the treating physician, optometrist, orthoptist or healthcare professional at an institution specialising in the rehabilitation of blind and partially sighted people (for example, Koninklijke Visio or Bartiméus).

Do I need a new medical certificate for each application?

You need a separate medical certificate for each aid you apply for. The medical certificate refers to specific function-specific provisions or aids, outlining their necessity and effectiveness. These differ for each application, so the health insurer requires a medical certificate for each aid.

If the replacement concerns the same device outside the specified use period and was previously supplied by us, you do not need a new certificate. The medical certificate is already in our possession, and the replacement may proceed immediately.

What is the difference between loan and ownership?

You will receive ownership of certain medical aids. These aids are yours; you are the owner. A deductible applies to aids provided as your property. Please note that this deductible will always be deducted from your outstanding deductible.

Have you opted for a voluntary deductible? Then your health insurer will first deduct the costs from your mandatory deductible and then from your voluntary deductible. Once you've met your deductible, this care will be covered by your insurance up to the maximum amount for which you are insured. The deductible applies to insured persons aged 18 and over.

Other aids are provided on loan. This means you may use them as long as you are a customer of the health insurer providing the care. After that, you must return them. Therefore, you do not become the owner of these aids.
